[Boston? : s.n.], 2009 . xxv, 154 p. ; 23 cm..

Lin Lu commented on 2014-11-21: This book generally guides the international student’s to finding a job in the United State step by step. In the beginning, the author stated difficulties for international students to find a company willing to sponsor a work visa. For example, they must compete with many job seekers who already have U.S. work authorization with English barriers and many companies have policies against sponsoring work visas. With the these confusions, the author wrote this book to help international students covering: why and how companies decide to sponsor work visas, how to uncover jobs that others can’t find, how to determine, articulate and broadcast your value to a potential employer and so on. Quoting from the author, never allow a person to tell you no who doesn’t have the power to say yes. Even though there are a lot of people outside telling how difficult for international students to find a job in

New comment on Paying for college without going broke / /cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=358#comments By Chany, Kalman A..

New York : Random House, 2010 . xxiv, 324 p. : 26 cm..

Namrata Nanavaty commented on 2014-11-18: This book provides detailed information on not only paying for college but also about the process of applying, determining financial aid and need, and other process-oriented details regarding the college process for both students AND parents. For first generation college students, this book could be incredibly useful and worthwhile. It also addresses many myths or assumptions people make about the college process lie you can't get financial aid if you have savings, for example. This may be a better resource for someone that is still applying for an undergraduate education, but could still be useful in determining how to take steps to get back onto your feet, financially, after coming to college.

New York, NY : Hyperion, 2007 . xii, 236 p. ; 25 cm..

Lin Lu commented on 2014-10-31: This book discovers the 20 workplace habits we need to break. The author Marshall Goldsmith is an expert at helping global leaders overcome their sometimes unconscious annoying habits and attain a higher level of success. Divided by four sections, the trouble with success, then twenty habits that hold you back from the top, how we can change for the better, and pulling out the stops, this book helps “successful” people to be more successful. In addition, this book is case-based, in where a lot of real cased are discussed in the specific chapter with specific topic to assist readers thinking. I think this book would be extremely useful for people desiring attaining a higher level of success and people planning their career path. Whether you are near the top of the ladder or still have a ways to climb, his book serves as an essential guide to help you eliminate your dysfunctions and move to where you want to go.

New comment on Happiness at work : /cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=1450#comments By Rao, Srikumar S.,.

New York : McGraw-Hill, 2010 . xix, 235 p. ; 22 cm..

Lin Lu commented on 2014-10-24: This book shows us how to bring joy back into our life. In each chapter, the author picks an interesting question or tip to discuss, such as why positive thinking is bad for you, Are you really happy? I suspect not. In these chapters, the author begins her argument by introducing his unique method to bring happiness into work and then raises many examples to verify it. At the end of each chapter, there is an exercise portion that we can practice it by specific scenario. As the author mentions in the book, it is ineffective and not recommended to read this book like a novel and put it aside. However, we need to do the exercise at the end of each chapter and record our observations. I think this book is extremely useful to people feel bored and unhappy at their work and also helpful for students worrying about work stress in the future.

New comment on Free marketing : /cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=610#comments By Cockrum, Jim,.

Hoboken, N.J. : Wiley, 2011 . xxiii, 327 p. ; 24 cm..

Namrata Nanavaty commented on 2014-10-20: The author starts by speaking about how to best market yourself online because nowadays with the explosion of social media that's prevalent everywhere, most things said about you do become permanent. As a solution, this author offers solutions to manage your online reputation for a business or personal status. And the best one is to fix every problem quickly, and never accept something that happens as final. This book would be beneficial for any students look for an entrepreneurial experience after graduation because starting up a business can obviously be stressful, tumultuous and difficult. It'd also be useful for students interested in marketing in general because it speaks greatly to how to mend PR-related damages that occur pretty frequently. The organization and casual tone made it really easy for me to read and understand what the author was trying to convey.

Lin Lu commented on 2014-10-20: This book is written by M. Rose Jonas, who is TV’s job doctor with millions of experience help consulting others’ questions about career. Although it seems that this book only talks about resume from the name, it actually talks about everything you can think of in the career. Chapter 1 helps you think about what career or job you want. Chapter 2 tells you how to network and go for the job. Chapter 3 takes you through the interview process, from the phone call to the dilemma of taking a job you don’t want. Chapter 4 joins you on your first day on the job, and shows you how to make a good impression and do a good job. In Chapter 5, you’ll learn how to get ahead; in Chapter 6, hoe to get out of career trouble; and in Chapter 7, how to leave a job when you’re finished with it, or it with you. Over, this book basically answers all your concerns about careers. Lastly, I love the author’s suggestion in the beginning of the book I would like to say not only to myself but to everyone, “Do what you love. Follow your passion. Be willing to put time and money into following your dream. Be patient”.

Conveniently divided into ten chapters, this book takes the reader from discovering the right career path to job searches, interviews, then successful tips in navigating through the job environment. Within each chapter there are section titles to help focus ideas and drive the points home. One of the best tools is a chapter summary at the end of each chapter for quick references and a recap of all the information presented. This book is tailored towards the young professional entering the job force. However, it incorporates foundational knowledge for any professional to succeed in their careers. It is well written and an easy read packed full of valuable advice.

Haimeng Cen commented on 2014-04-30: This book is a very positive read that offers advice on how to manage the balance between your personal and professional life, and how to achieve happiness in your life by planning your career and financial stability in a smart way. The author challenges the reader’s thoughts and tries to shift how work and career life is viewed. He engages the reader with his style of writing and it’s almost like you are having a heart-to-heart with an close and influential friend. New comment on The charisma myth : /cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=981#comments By Cabane, Olivia Fox..

New York : Portfolio/Penguin, 2013 . viii, 263 pages ; 22 cm..

Marnie Clark commented on 2014-04-29: In “The Charisma Myth,” author Olivia Fox Cabane utilizes several tools to debunk the “myth” that charisma, the art of presence, power and warmth, is not solely a personal trait that one must be born with. Rather, it is an attribute that any person can slowly master through the patient practice of various exercises. She stresses that to gain charisma is not to change one’s entire persona. Loosely defined, charisma is the ability to make others feel important, and thus gain respect and admiration as a trade-off. Cabane, a consultant who teaches charisma tools, does an excellent job providing firsthand examples of client issues and how, with the proper implementation, her clients mitigated these issues. However, she stresses that in order to gain charisma, one must mentally embrace the changes required of them. For example, she provides various exercises through which to emphasize certain skills (ie, the prefect handshake). In the initial pages, Cabane stresses that to lack practice equates to failure, and thus all tools should be utilized, regardless of comfort level. She also does a fantastic job applying practical advice to everyday situations in which full-fledged charisma can benefit. And indeed, there are many. The concept of charisma is of increasing importance in modern-day management. Indeed, many companies are starting to incorporate “charisma curriculum” into their training programs. Thus, Cabane’s guide is a shining gem amongst other time-worn self-help books. I would highly recommend this book to any student, regardless of discipline, as charisma is a lifelong skill that can facilitate greater levels of personal fulfilment and job success.

New comment on The 2-hour job search : /cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=997#comments By Dalton, Steve,.

Berkeley : Ten Speed Press, 2012 . 233 p. : 21 cm..

Lin Lu commented on 2014-04-29: This book talks about tips using technology to hunt for jobs compared with the outdated strategies. First of all, the author introduces the LAMP (List, Alumni, Motivation, Posting) method process to make a list of target employers. Then, he continues talking about tips for people to contact with alumni and employers to get more information about the job and industry. At the final stage, he discusses the interviewing tips of an informational interviewing: research, discuss, and follow-up. Overall, I think this book is really helpful for people finding a job right now and trying to make this process as efficient as possible. And the most interesting I found in this book is that the author introduces how to use the popular social media like Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter to find jobs, which we can socialize with others and at the same time looking for possible opportunities.

New comment on Networking for every college student and graduate : /cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=996#comments By Faulkner, Michael Lawrence..

. xv, 173 pages : 23 cm.

Margaret Kealy commented on 2014-04-29: It has been said that millennials believe that hard work is the key to success, they believe this more so than previous generations. But according to this book, this belief in hard work being the key might let millennials down. This book shows the true importance of networking, what it takes to network, with whom to network, and how to translate these contacts into a job. It goes from what questions to ask, to rapport building, to keeping in touch, and how to ask for favors in the appropriate way. This book is an amazing resource addressing the most valuable resource that many college students and recent grads forget that they have, and how to tap into this resources appropriately. In reading this book, you will gain a complete understanding of networking and its importance to you in not only your career search, but in your future as a whole.

New comment on 5 necessary skills to keep your career on track / /cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=250#comments By Pearson, Richard S..

Denver, Colo. : Outskirts Press, Inc., 2011 . xiv, 210 p. : 22 cm..

Marnie Clark commented on 2014-04-15: With the growing prominence of managerial “self-help” books and movements, “5 Necessary Skills to Keeping Your Career On Track,” by Richard S. Pearson was perhaps a few years before its time. Also known as “5 Necessary Skills To Maintain Employment in Tumultuous Times,” the book emphasizes self-awareness, an understanding of one’s external environment, and several “hard” skills in the creation and maintenance of a successful career. Pearson perhaps sets himself apart by staging his book as a remedy for unemployment in today’s unfavorable job markets, rather than just another career guide. He lays out each skill in its own chapter, and then provides background and support for each. For example, he places emphasis on knowing what’s around you, particularly in your field – will the job you seek be unnecessary in 5 years? Will you be replaced by computers? An underlying theme which stood out to me is Pearson’s attempt to dispel the ideas of ego and narcissism so touted by today’s CEOs, in favor of humor, humility, and interpersonal skills. He goes as far as providing instructions on how to act at parties and networking events. Pearson also provides resources on resume and cover letter critiquing, which I feel like detracts from his earlier musings. He does, however, hit the nail on the head in terms of mentorship—also very prominent right now, I feel as though mentorship truly does open many doors to job-seekers. As a student, this book proves to be an excellent resource for soon-to-be or recent graduates, especially those seeking employment in relatively narrow fields.
